RESEARCH

Power Optimization for On-Chip Network, SPORT lab, USC
The increasing number of cores on a chip has incentivized the developement of efficient on-chip networks. We focus on the power efficiency andthe delay balancing for various network-on-chip (NoC) structures.

  • Proposed an algorithm that optimally solves the energy-aware and fairness-aware application mapping problem within polynomial time
  • Presented an power-efficient mapping mechanism for express channel-based NoCs

Hybrid Electrical Energy Storage (HEES) Systems, SPORT lab, USC
The aim of this project is to design and manage HEES systems to achieve one or more of the following goals of an energy storage system: high energy efficiency, low cost, long lifetime, etc.

  • Modeled the residential HEES system considering rate capacity effect of batteries, conversion circuit power loss, EES elements' lifetime, system volume, etc.
  • Proposed an optimal design and management methodology that maximized the return on investment (ROI) of HEES systems
  • Achieved an annual ROI of 7%, which was 60% more than the average of EES systems

Dynamic Power Management (DPM) for Portable Devices, SPORT lab, USC
The art of dynamic power management (DPM) in battery-powered mobile systems is about selectively setting idle components to a sleep state in order to minimize power loss and latency.

  • Derived a reinforcement learning-based DPM policy to reduce energy consumption and overall delay
  • Improved the energy efficiency by 9% compared to battery-only supply on WLAN module and a wider range of energy-delay tradeoff compared to expert-based DPM approach

Instruction Set Extension for H.264/AVC decoder, NICS, Tsinghua Univ.
Instruction set extension provides an efficient solution for complicated applications such as H.264/AVC, a video processing algorithm.

  • Modified SimpleScalar and Wattch toolsets to find the bottlenecks of H.264/AVC
  • Realized register-transfer level implementation and simulation based on MIPS
  • Achieved a speedup ratio of 1.6 and power reduction ratio of 40% on average
